Our Tax Laws are not easy to understand for a common citizen of Pakistan. That’s the reason that very educated professionals, business men, and even salaried persons also do not declare the tax returns, even tax is properly deducted by their customers and employers and paid in the government exchequer.
It was the responsibility of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in the Past to educate the society regarding the tax culture and giving them trust to realize that tax is not a punishment but it is a responsibility.
Currently, where FBR follow-ups to the taxpayers regarding the compliance in declarations and payment of taxes on timely basis they should also expedite the registration process. For instance currently it is very hard task to get a sales tax registration of a taxpayer. He has to face multiple hurdles on their way. FBR has facilitated a much in a decade but still a lot is still awaiting to update its system.
Unfortunately, it is a trend in Pakistan that we always associate politics with every issue of the country. Economy, tax and financial system is one of them. First of all politics and all such economic issues works in separate domain. It’s also worthy to note that country’s politics effects economy but is not dependent on it.

This decision will be appreciated by all those who understand that it is the need of the hour now to eliminate the culture of bribery in our tax authority. Department as a whole is doing good however still there are some elements which we need to focus and remove and bribery is one of the biggest giant in such a department. Tax Evasion is another thing which is always hardened to stop and through documentation of the transactions such can also be reduced. Now it should not be politicizing the issue of appointment of Mr Shabbar Zaidi, as he is competent person from the neutral side of our tax system and aimed to eliminate the bribery and tax evasion and those segments of the society who are afraid of him should accept the change.
